The Clinical Implementation of Precision Cancer Medicine
By Derrick Haslem, MD, and Lincoln Nadauld, MD, PhD

Historically, the treatment of cancer has relied on the application of cytotoxic chemotherapeutic regimens chosen empirically based on the cancer's site of origin. This approach has seen iterative improvements over 5 decades resulting in today's modern chemotherapy that can be delivered in the outpatient setting with manageable side-effect profiles and quality clinical outcomes. However, the advent of novel diagnostic technologies is beginning to usher in an era of precision cancer medicine, defined by the molecular characterization of a tumor to identify actionable alterations, followed by treatment with therapeutics that specifically target the alteration. Actionable alterations are variably defined, but are broadly classified as scientifically validated genomic alterations for which a targeted therapeutic exists.

Do You Know . . .
The practice of diagnostic microbiology in today's clinical laboratory is undergoing significant changes. Emerging diagnostic technologies highlighted by fully automated microbiology and molecular-based systems for the rapid detection of infectious diseases, respiratory viruses, gastrointestinal pathogens, and genes that code for antibiotic resistance, have significantly improved and streamlined the laboratory's ability to identify a wide variety of microbial pathogens in a relatively short period of time compared to traditional methods.

By Jennifer Dawson, MHA, DLM(ASCP)CMSLS, QLCCM, QIHCCM, LSSBB

As part of our ongoing partnership with CLMA, please CLICK HERE to read Electronic Non-conforming Event Management by Jennifer Dawson, MHA, DLM(ASCP)CMSLS, QLCCM, QIHCCM, LSSBB. Derived from the winning poster presentation at CLMA's KnowledgeLab 2015 and discusses how t he purpose of non-conforming event management is to identify and characterize problem-prone processes so investigations can be carried out, root causes identified, and improvement projects initiated, thus eliminating reoccurrence.
