Middleware is a Powerful Director's Tool
By Danyel H. Tacker, PhD, DABCC, FACB
As automated systems gain in complexity and many laboratory departments are consolidating into core laboratories, there is a persistent need to integrate technologies and control data flow in a way that classical laboratory information systems (LIS) cannot always accommodate. When you consider the combination of advanced diagnostic analyzers with process leveling provided by line automation (ie, tracks), the complicated interactions between analyzers and automation components can produce unnecessary obstacles. CLICK HERE to read about how middleware (a type of software) can serve as a conduit (and sometimes translator) for data flowing between diagnostic hardware and the LIS (and other information systems) to the great benefit of the lab and lab leadership.
