Usage Trends: Urinalysis Analyzers

March 2020 - Vol. 9 No. 3 - Page #20

This past November, MedicalLab Management published the results of our annual State of Laboratory Technology issue (medlabmag.com/SOLT2019), which included usage trends, satisfaction ratings, and acquisitions plans for several products in the clinical laboratory marketplace. Following are some additional results from this survey.

As automated urinalysis has continued to develop, urine chemistry autoverification has assisted in reducing manual labor and other tasks involved in manual microscopic evaluation. Because urinalysis analyzers help reduce manual/visual testing subjectivity, offer an expanding list of possible tests, and enable staff to attend to other tasks while running daily QC operations, their proper place in the clinical lab is cemented.

Looking ahead, just 14% of hospital labs are currently planning to acquire a new urinalysis analyzer.

Staffing impact, cost, and turnaround time are the leading decision points in choosing a urinalysis analyzer. It is notable that staffing impact is the primary factor for all facilities with more than 100 beds, while the smallest facilities prioritize cost over staffing impact.

Siemens and Beckman Coulter are the leading vendors under consideration in the urinalysis marketplace.
