Refrigerators and Freezers

November 2020 - Vol. 9 No. 10 - Page #30

More and more clinical laboratories are taking advantage of purpose-designed and built, medical-grade refrigeration technology. While there are a wide range of clinical capacities and locations that require durable and reliable refrigerated storage, it is the advanced features of medical-grade devices that are so appealing to laboratory directors and the several pathology and laboratory disciplines that depend on precise environmental storage conditions. Furthermore, the need for deep freezing has expanded in recent years and these devices require the same strict levels of temperature control and metrics reporting as refrigerators.

The number of laboratories making exclusive use of medical-grade units continues to grow, and this concept combined with strong user satisfaction makes a strong argument for the acquisition of these essential devices.

Although it is increasing, the exclusive use of medical-grade refrigerators and freezers has yet to become the majority practice.

Facility size is not a key determinant in the exclusive adoption of medical-grade refrigeration.

Other than a small downturn in 2018, the exclusive use of medical-grade refrigeration has steadily risen over the last 5 years.

Most laboratories give high marks to their refrigeration systems, with 85% ascribing them as excellent or good.

Given the need for precise, accurate, and reliable temperature-controlled storage systems, a brisk 42% of facilities expect to acquire new refrigeration units in the near future.

Helmer and Thermo Fisher enjoy substantial representation in medical laboratories, while this market remains busy with Cardinal Health, Follett, and others also well used.
