Category: Laboratory Information Systems

Whether your laboratory’s information system is standalone or part of a larger, facility-wide IS, many features have grown from conveniences to necessities. Clearly, the ability to electronically track a patient’s treatment progress is of great benefit. Further, elements such as clinical decision support, lab order/ICD code comparisons, QA parameters, workflow management, and reporting compliance mechanisms provide transparency into the entirety of lab operations.

Laboratory information systems receive generally positive ratings, although just 18% deem their LIS to be excellent.

Most facilities planning to adopt a new LIS are on pace to do so within the next 3 years.

Final LIS decisions are often made at the facility administration level, but two thirds (65%) of lab directors provide valuable input, if not make the decision outright.

Over a quarter (27%) of facilities are planning to adopt a new LIS in the near future, down slightly from last year.

Large scale information system vendors Cerner, Epic, and Meditech are widely used, but laboratories of all sizes continue to utilize a range of appropriate solutions.
