Middleware

As laboratory technology has become more advanced and sophisticated in recent years, there has been a substantial increase in efforts to network multiple instruments to each other, and to a central laboratory information system. Autogenerating test results, autoverification, clinical decision support, QA and QC metrics, and more all depend on information transfer and the accuracy of that information.

Armed with such data, the laboratory director can hone in on process gaps and identify tools that can benefit the lab from the bench to the director’s office. Today’s middleware systems can facilitate workflow monitoring, help reveal and analyze trends and patterns, and better predict potential issues before they arise.

Labs are almost universally satisfied with their middleware systems, with 82% awarding the highest marks to their vendors.

Use of middleware is common in facilities of all sizes, with both the smallest and largest facilities increasing their use over last year.

Data Innovations continues to lead middleware systems in use, with several vendors, including Beckman Coulter and Sysmex well represented.
