Staffing in the clinical laboratory continues to be a challenge for institutions of all sizes. Certainly, the retention of staff members who develop and refine their skills over time is paramount, which places direct focus on the process of assisting those staff members in their development.

As laboratory leaders, developing your staff members over time to maximize their abilities and grow into independent leaders themselves is key to ongoing quality and success in the lab. Given your insight provided by vast experience, it is never too early to plant the seeds of leadership and nurture that growth. It is important to encourage your staff to learn from the experiences of others and to continue to broaden their education. See page 18 for more information on how to cultivate excellent and long-standing staff.

This concept is the driving force behind MedicalLab Management's presentation of peer-to-peer laboratory leadership content, free of charge to all clinical laboratory practitioners; from directors to bench techs. While our content is generally intended for director-level laboratorians, exposing management concepts to those who will eventually enter the managerial ranks can only benefit the laboratory overall. This is why the concept of peer-to-peer information sharing is so critical to the mission of MLM. Although we hope our content reaches all current laboratory directors, we want to speak to the future lab leaders as well.
